Loney interested in ISU, Gill out of running

As one name disappeared from the Iowa State football coaching search, another potentially emerged.

St. Louis Rams offensive line coach Steve Loney, a former ISU coach and player, is interested in the head coaching position at his alma mater, a source told the Tribune while Buffalo coach Turner Gill, a fan favorite to replace Gene Chizik, signed a contract extension through 2013.

The terms of Gill’s agreement were not released. In three years he transformed the Bulls from one of the worst programs in Division I to Mid-American Conference champions.

Loney has not been approached for the ISU job, the source said. The source also added that Loney would only take a Division I head coaching job if it was a perfect fit because the 56-year-old believes he would only have time to potentially be in charge of one program and he would like to make the most of it.

Loney earned a varsity letter from ISU in 1973 and had three coaching stints with the Cyclones. He served as a graduate assistant under former coach Earl Bruce and was Dan McCarney’s offensive coordinator from 1995-97 and again from 2000-01. Between stints at ISU he held the same roles at Minnesota.

He jumped to the NFL in 2003. He was the Minnesota Vikings offensive line coach through 2005. In his final year in Minneapolis he became the offensive coordinator. The following season he served as the Arizona Cardinals offensive line coach.
In 2007, Loney became the head coach at Drake, compiling a 6-5 record before moving on to St Louis.

Gill’s contract has a rollover option each year and he will become one of the highest paid coaches in the MAC, according to a university press release. Gill is 15-22 at Buffalo and defeated No. 12 Ball State 42-24 in the MAC title game on Dec. 5.

Buffalo, which is 8-5, will face Connecticut on Jan. 3 in the International Bowl. It is the school’s first-ever bowl appearance.

“I’m going to be here at the University of Buffalo,” Gill told the Associated Press. “I’ve given you my word, I’ve given my football team our word that I will be the football coach in 2009 at the University of Buffalo.”

After Gill, I believe Steve Loney is the dead-on choice to lead ISU into the future. No loyalty problem with Loney, he's Iowan through and through!!!
