Cyclones rout UNO in exhibition game

If Saturday’s one and only exhibition game of the season is any indication, the Iowa State men’s basketball team should be better this season.

The Cyclones completely dominated Nebraska-Omaha, getting points in the paint and from the outside in a 74-54 win. ISU rode the 1-2 punch of Craig Brackins and Sean Haluska to the win. Brackets led the Cyclones with 17 points and Haluska finished with 16, including a 4-for-5 performance from beyond the new 3-point line.

“It always feels good when you go out there the first game and shoot the ball well,” said Haluska, who was 6-of-7 from the field. “I was just sitting there open and I had to do my part and knock them down and I was able to do that throughout the game.”

Brackins scored most of his points from close range, but did go out and knock down a trey as ISU shot 40 percent (10-of-25) from beyond the arc.

“I’m just trying to go out there and do my part,” Brackins said.

Outside shooting wasn’t one of the Cyclones’ strengths last season so to hit 40 percent from 3-point range was pleasing to ISU coach Greg McDermott.

“(Outside shooting) has to be a staple of our team,” McDermott said. “Because we are really without any big (wing players), we’re forced to play three guards and we’re going to put shooters out there a lot.”

The outcome could have been worse. UNO missed its first 12 shots and ISU had a 24-5 lead midway through the first half. The Cyclones led 35-23 at intermission, extended their lead in the opening minutes of the second half and put the game out of reach behind a 11-4 run in the second half that gave them a 57-37 lead with less than 10 minutes to play.

“I was pleased with the start of both halves,” said McDermott. “I thought the five starters that we put out there got us off to the start that we needed to get off to to start the game and then we were able to gain some momentum back at the start of the second half which is good to see.”

UNO was led by Mitch Albers with 14 points and Andrew Bridger with 10. The Mavericks were able to stay somewhat close to the Cyclones because of ISU’s substitution pattern. Twelve players on the ISU roster saw action in the game and 10 of the 12 played 12 minutes or more.

“There were some good things and there’s some things we’ve got to work on. That’s why you play these games,” McDermott said.

ISU had a 52-34 advantage on the boards with Bryan Peterson’s 10 rebounds leading the Cyclones. Diante Garrett scored nine points, dished out 10 assists and had just one turnover. The Cyclones had 19 assists in the contest.

“(Garrett) did a great job of getting everybody involved,” Haluska said. “He did a really good job of keeping his head up and seeing the open floor and finding the open man.”

McDermott said he thinks Garrett is doing a better job of taking care of the ball than he did last season and that he’s making better decisions with his passing and shot selection.

“Defensively, he’s made strides and I’ve been happy with his decisions in practice,” McDermott said. “I was happy with his decisions in the scrimmage against Creighton and then again today. He’s going to be on the floor a lot for us and I’ve been pleased with his progress.”

A disappointment for McDermott were no assists and eight turnovers from the post players.

' “We’ve got to be able to pass it out of a double-team to a shooter that’s got his feet set and hit him in the target,” McDermott said. “And we have to take better care of the basketball.

“We probably need to have a little bit more of a killer instinct. We had this team down 24-5 10 minutes into the game with a chance to really put it away and went to our bench and there was a falloff. That has to change. Our level of play needs to increase when you replace a tired player with a fresh player. It was very similar the second half.”

ISU opens the regulars season Friday against California-Davis . Game time is 7 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum.

Alright Cyclones! Great start. Although I live in Illinois, I'll be cheering you on and hoping to make it to Ames for a game at some point this season!
