Football player of the game: Michael Brandtner

Iowa State punter Mike Brandtner blasts one of the eight punts he had in the Cyclones’ 35-7 loss to Nebraska Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium. Brandtner averaged 44.8 yards on those eight punts, including two of the three longeset punts of his career. Blocking for Brandtner are Nick Slobidsky, 61, and Sean Smith.

The most ironic player on a football team is often the punter. When the punter jogs in from the sideline, it means the team has stalled, will give up its drive and has failed on a chance to score.

Punters have successful seasons when their teams struggle. If the team plays well, they never see the field.

Iowa State punter Mike Brandtner looked like the Cyclones' MVP Saturday, with eight punts for an average of 44.8 yards.

That average included two of his three longest punts of the season, a 59-yard boot and a 69-yarder that is second-longest of his career.

All that in spite of a tricky wind that was whipping through Jack Trice Stadium.

"It's difficult because even though it doesn't feel like it, the wind is blowing through the stadium pretty strong," Brandtner said.

Brandtner's performance bumped his season average to 40.6 yards per punt. That's good enough to land him fifth on the Cyclones' all-time list.

"Kicking into the wind is something that all kickers struggle with, and you can do your best to get better with it, but kicking without it is 10 times better," Brandtner said.
