For the second week in a row, I was drafted to sit at Ames High and watch Division-I coaches watch Harrison Barnes play basketball. While Coach K did not reappear for Monday’s open gym, the overall event was as star-studded as the last.

(I realize I used “star-studded” in last week’s post. Forgive me this one cliché.)

Anyway, from my count there were five assistants and three head coaches in the crowd, several of whom were familiar faces. That included three of the four Iowa State coaches; Jeff Rutter sat this one out because you can only have three coaches on the road at a time, although I would have made the argument that Greg McDermott was there to watch his son. Former ISU assistant Jean Prioleau dropped by representing Texas Christian. And another former Illini/current Kentucky man, this time head coach Billy Gillispie, made the trip.

Then there was Minnesota coach Tubby Smith, plus assistants from North Carolina and Stanford. Rumors had been spreading today that Kansas’ Bill Self would make an appearance, but when I checked with Harrison he said, “If he was here, he didn’t talk to me.”

Anyway, I thought this was an interesting collection of coaches, even without Bill Self. Here we go.

Gillispie spent much of the hour-long session talking to Smith, who he replaced at Kentucky. Meanwhile McDermott sat between Pri and Daniyal Robinson, who replaced Pri when he left for TCU.

Kevin Bacon was off somewhere, still heartbroken about the whole John Edwards love scandal.

In a kinda related story…
I hear Mac and T.J. Otzelberger were in Florida this weekend, visiting Marquis Gilstrap, who already committed to ISU.

In a slightly related story…
The Arizona Republic is reporting the same story we heard last week, that Jiri Hubalek has been invited to Suns’ training camp. Link: Team invites 3 players to Tucson camp

You won't see McDermott and Gillispie talking, that's for sure.
