Wednesday’s Ames High boys basketball scrimmage wasn’t your typical pickup game.

Not when Coach K is in attendance.

Duke’s Mike Krzyewski was one of roughly a dozen head and assistant basketball coaches, including Iowa State’s Greg McDermott, in the Ames High gym to watch Little Cyclone junior Harrison Barnes in action. This week marks the beginning of when coaches can visit players in home and view open gym and weight room sessions.

“It does feel nice to have big-time names like Coach K come into your gym and watch you play,” Barnes said. “It does show the interest (coaches) have in me.”

Barnes is considered by many scouting services as the top small forward in the country in the Class of 2010. The 6-foot-6 wing boasts an offer list that’s a who’s who of college basketball.
Barnes said he didn’t feel any nerves as he’s been playing in front of an audience of coaches all summer. Barnes attended and played in several of the nation’s biggest summer camps and AAU tournaments across the country this summer.

“I just kind of go with the flow,” Barnes said. “I’m not pressed to make a decision so I’m just going along with it and just trying to get better every day.”

Hitting 3-pointers and slamming homes thunderous dunks, Barnes put on a show for his suitors. Getting on the court with his teammates was the highlight of the night for him.

“It was nice to be out there with my teammates again because we haven’t all played together since the end of last season,” Barnes said. “Just get out there and play and establish the chemistry our team is going to have this year.”
