Recap of Big 12 Media Days day three

Here are a few quick notes from the third day of Big 12 Media Days, which was more insightful than the second day.

1. Texas coach Mack Brown said he knew in the pregame meal that quarterback Garrett Gilbert didn’t expect to play in the BCS title game and that his eyes were “as big as silver dollars” when Brown told him to replace an injured Colt McCoy.

“He ate all of his steak and wasn’t nervous,” Brown said of Gilbert. “You can always tell the guys that say ‘Can I get some of your steak’ aren’t going to play.

Gilbert almost didn’t. Brown said he couldn’t find his helmet when he went into the game.

2. Brown said he took the “Red Out Beat Texas” video Nebraska produced as a compliment. Brown is also going to be disappointed that the Longhorns won’t be facing the Cornhuskers in a conference game after this season.

“My only disappointment is that we may never play again unless it just happens,” Brown said. “I love that game.”

3. Colorado football coach Dan Hawkins said Tuesday that more former three-star college players are in the NFL than former four-or five-star college players. If that’s the case it would make sense. There are a lot more three-star players coming out of high school each year than four-or five-star players.

That’s all for now. I’m off to catch a flight, but there will be more in Thursday’s paper on how Big 12 coaches would rather talk about anything but the league’s future and how Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops compared DeMarco Murray to former Sooner Adrian Peterson.
