Kiel Uhl did it.

In his final race as an Iowa State runner, Uhl placed fifth in the 10,000-meter race Friday, earning All-American honors in a time of 28 minutes, 58.55 seconds.

“This makes all the work I have done worth it,” Uhl said. “I couldn’t be happier.”

Liberty’s Sam Chelanga won the race in a time of 28:37.40.

Uhl made two moves in the race to earn his All-America status. His first surge came with six laps to go. His second came with three laps left.

“You could feel the pace pick up after a slow first 5,000 meters,” Uhl said. “I went with the pack. I can’t think of a better way to close out my college career.”

Neither can ISU track coach Corey Ihmels.

“He ran a great race and did the things we talked about before the race,” Ihmels said. “His name will be on the All-American board with the other greats who have competed at Iowa State. He belongs there.”

Also, Lashawn Wright (24.12) placed seventh in her heat of the 200 and didn’t qualify for the finals. Brandon Rooney (3:49.62) was eighth in his 1,500 semifinal and didn’t advance to the finals.
