Now that’s a dominating performance.

Iowa State’s Lisa Koll won the 5,000-meter title at the 2010 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships by nearly 11 seconds on Friday. Koll completed the race in 15 minutes, 39.65 seconds.

“I have gotten stronger, and I have more speed now,” Koll said of her improvement since she won the 10,000 title in 2008. “I ran my race tonight.”

And no one else could.

Koll pulled away at about the 1,500 meter mark and cruised to an early victory.

She also ran away from the field when she won the 10,000 in 2008. She lapped three All-Americans in that race. She is also the only three-time Big 12 outdoor champion in the 10,000.

This year Koll’s success has translated over to the shorter distance races.

She was named the Big 12’s most outstanding performance at the conference indoor meet after winning the 5,000 and 3,000.

“I have started to think that I can make an impact at this distance, not just in the 10,000,” Koll said. “After being out for much of last season, I went back to my base training and started working my way back. Each success I have had this season has made me more confident.”

After the race, ISU coach Corey Ihmels was ecstatic that Koll added another national title to her resume.

“Any time you win a national championship it’s a good race,” Ihmels said. “Lisa is very competitive and thrives in these situations. Now we will get a night’s rest and come back tomorrow in the 3,000 meters.”

Koll is the favorite in the 3,000. She is ranked first nationally in the race.
