KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Iowa State men’s basketball coach Greg McDermott pulled forward Marquis Gilstrap with 28.1 seconds left in Wednesday’s game.

Gilstrap got a standing ovation from the Cyclone faithful.

McDermott then pulled forward Craig Brackins.

He too received a standing ovation.

Wednesday might have been the final game for both players. Gilstrap won’t return next season. Brackins may head to the NBA.

“I felt appreciated,” said Gilstrap of the ovation. “They appreciated how hard I played, and I really appreciate how they supported me and my family this year and I don’t feel like I could have been at a better place this year.”

Gilstrap’s appeal for a medical redshirt was denied by the NCAA on Tuesday. ISU coach Greg McDermott informed him of the news after the loss to Texas.

Also, Brackins expects to make a decision on his future in the coming week, the junior from California said after the game.

In his one year on campus, Gilstrap made the most of his time. He entered Wednesday averaging 14.8 points and 8.6 rebounds.

“I had the best time,” Gilstrap said. “It is probably the best year of basketball I played.”

A possible CBI bid
McDermott hasn’t discussed if the Cyclones will pursue or accept a bid to play in the CBI. He plans to talk to his staff and the ISU administration about it now that the season is over.

But based on McDermott’s comments Wednesday, it doesn’t sound like the Cyclones will be playing in the tournament.

“We are pretty banged up right now,” McDermott said. “I’m not sure that’s the best idea.”

Foul trouble dooms Cyclones
McDermott felt that ISU center Justin Hamilton picking up three fouls by the 10 minute, 50 second mark of the first half was a major factor in the game.

“(The three fouls) put us in a tough spot and one we didn’t really recover from,” McDermott said.

Taking in the game
Two days before opening the Big 12 women’s basketball tournament, the ISU women’s basketball team cheered on the men’s team Wednesday. The team sat about 15 rows behind the Cyclone bench.
