Continuing a tradition, Iowa State’s seniors delivered speeches to the Hilton Coliseum crowd after the final regular-season home game.

There were the typical thank-yous to family members, friends and coaches from Anna Florzak, Alison Lacey, Genesis Lightbourne, Shellie Mosman and Denae Stuckey. But the Cyclones made time in their speeches for some well-timed jokes after a 59-41 win over Colorado.

Florzak, a reserve guard who has seen limited playing time in 13 games this season, said Saturday was the longest she had been on the court during a game day. She played only 5 minutes, but the postgame speeches gave her plenty more court time.

Unlike Stuckey and Mosman, who had their fiancés on the court with them, Florzak said she was single.

“I’m still on the market if there are any takers,” she said.

Lightbourne used the word “irregardless” frequently in her speech, an ode to 15th-year coach Bill Fennelly’s penchant for using the word.

“I knew that was coming,” Fennelly said. “I deserved it.”

Sidelined star

Lacey, ISU’s leader in points, assists and steals who hasn’t practiced all week while suffering from a respiratory illness, said she wrote her senior speech earlier in the day.

“I was knocked out for a good two, three days,” said Lacey, whose illness has caused fatigue and shortness of breath.

Lacey said she’s been going to the doctor and sleeping to try to get better, but she wasn’t going to let herself get too bummed about watching from the bench on senior day.

“I was definitely sad about it,” Lacey said, “but there’s nothing I could do about it.”

Lacey’s roommate, Brittany Lange, was also honored on the court after the game.

Lange, a senior kinesiology major, played at ISU for two seasons after transferring from Creighton. But injuries forced Lange to end her playing career, and she has been a student assistant the last two years.

Four-peat

This senior class will end their careers with four NCAA Tournament berths.

As freshmen and sophomores, the Cyclones advanced to the second round.

As juniors, they got to the Elite Eight.

This season, the Cyclones are scheduled to host the first two rounds of the tournament on March 21 and 23 at Hilton.
