The Iowa State women’s track and field team placed second and the men placed third at the inaugural Bill Bergan Invitational Saturday at the Lied Recreation Center.

Nebraska ran away with the men’s title, while the Cornhusker women edged ISU 122-105 in the team standings. Minnesota, Kansas State, Missouri, North Dakota State and South Dakota State also competed.

Three Cyclone women won individual events, including Laishema Hampton in the weight throw.

Hampton improved a personal best by nearly a foot with a throw of 60 feet, 10 3/4 inches. Senior seven-time All-American Lisa Koll set won the mile run in 4 minutes, 41.37 seconds, breaking her personal record by nearly seven seconds. Sophomore Kianna Elahi won the 400-meter run in 55.97.

On the men’s side, senior Brandon Rooney first in the mile (4:05.63), while sophomore Ian Warner won the 60-meter dash (6.72).

The invitational is named after Bergan, who led ISU to NCAA Cross Country championships in 1989 and 1994, as well as 10 Big Eight championships in both cross country and track.

ISU hosts the Cyclone Open on Friday.
