Utah Jazz forward Carlos Boozer made a first-hand assessment of the Iowa State men’s basketball team’s 72-50 victory over Chicago State on Sunday night.

By halftime, the eight-year NBA veteran thought the Cyclones’ defense is ahead of their offense. ISU made that an easy opinion as the game wore on, shooting 39.3 percent compared to the Cougars’ 28.6.

“Hopefully, they can keep doing their thing,” Boozer said of the Cyclones. “They have a chance to be a good team in the Big 12 this year.”

The Jazz had a three-day break in their schedule, and Boozer took the time to see his brother, Charles, play at Hilton Coliseum. He hadn’t been to an ISU game since the Iowa game in 2007, but he said he watches ISU play “all the time.”

Charles Boozer scored four points in 14 minutes, while Carlos sat front row and center, smiling and taking pictures.

“He’s gotten a lot better,” Carlos said. “He’s a hard worker, man, comes in, loves to play basketball.

“He’s happy to get more minutes this year and hopefully have a chance to help the team win a lot more games.”

ISU started slowly, leading by just 15-13 11 minutes in before building a 31-19 halftime lead.

The Cyclones scored the first eight points of the second half, highlighted by Marquis Gilstrap’s thundering, fast-break dunk over Chicago State’s Kabangu Kasamba 51 seconds into the half.

“The whole team came out kind of sluggish, but we knew we had to pick it up in the second half,” said Gilstrap, who finished with 11 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.

A 15-4 run stretched ISU’s lead to 25 points midway through the second half.

Defensively, ISU took Chicago State out of its offense. The Cougars’ top returning player, forward Carl Montgomery, was just 1 of 10 from the field.

Gilstrap and Craig Brackins struggled for ISU, combining for 4-of-23 shooting.

“Everybody has a night like this once in awhile,” ISU coach Greg McDermott said. “Unfortunately for us, they both had it on the same night.”

Guard Scott Christopherson led the Cyclones with 12 points off the bench. Six-foot-11 forward Jamie Vanderbeken had 11 points and was 3 of 3 from 3-point range.

Dendy expected to miss two weeks with injury
Forward LaRon Dendy is expected to miss at least two weeks after spraining the medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his knee at practice on Saturday.

“Losing the energy that LaRon brings to us certainly impacted us, changed our rotation,” said McDermott.
