The big news coming out of the Iowa State football and men’s basketball press conference on Monday is that Marshalltown Community College guard DeMarcus Phillips has signed a letter of intent with the Cyclones.

Phillips, a sophomore, is a Milwaukee native and played at Washington High School, where he earned Mr. Basketball honors in Wisconsin as a senior.

“DeMarcus Phillips is a combo guard that we just felt was way too talented not to take when the opportunity was there,” McDermott said.

McDermott also said that ISU is going to prepare for Tuesday’s game at Drake as if Bulldog guard Josh Young will play. Young missed the Drake season opener, an 88-82 loss to IUPUI on Saturday, with a hip pointer.

As for ISU football, coach Paul Rhoads said there is no need to be peaking ahead to a bowl game since a winning season, a seventh win and a third road win are on possible this week at Missouri. He thought that quarterback Austen Arnaud made progress last week against Colorado, but added that Arnaud can play better.

Arnaud said the Cyclones will have to score more than the 17 points it scored on Colorado this week if they’re to knock off the Tigers on Saturday.
