Stephens undergoes appendectomy and more news

Iowa State center Reggie Stephens is out indefinitely after undergoing appendectomy surgery at Mary Greeley Medical Care Center on Wednesday. Stephens had started the first eight games of the year at center and had started 36 consecutive starts.

Last year center Mike Knapp underwent an appendectomy surgery on Sept. 16. He returned at Baylor on Oct. 11. If 25 days Knapp was out is any indication, Stephens may be out for the rest of the regular season. The Cyclones final game is at Missouri on Nov. 21.

The Cyclones have two options to replace Stephens. Junior Sean Smith is listed as the backup center on the depth chart, but Alex Alvarez played center last year and started seven games.

In ISU women’s basketball news, I stopped by practice today and chatted with coach Bill Fennelly. He said freshman forward Chelsea Poppens has been the biggest surprise through the first few weeks of practice.

“We knew she was a great athlete, but she is getting more done at both ends of the court than we thought she could be at this point,” Fennelly said.

Finally, Encino (Calif.) offensive lineman Ben Loth has verbally committed to ISU, according to Rivals.com. Loth, a three-star prospect, is a high school teammate of tight end Pierce Richardson, who verbally committed to the Cyclones earlier this week.
