Reynolds out after fracturing fibula

Iowa State can’t shake the injury bug.

A day after finding out that defensive end Rashawn Parker will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL, wide receiver Darius Reynolds fractured his fibula in practice on Tuesday. As The Tribune first reported on Tuesday night, a source has said Reynolds injured his leg in practice on Tuesday.

The source didn’t say how long Reynolds was expected to be out. The junior college transfer will not play against Kansas State this Saturday. The normal recovery time for a fractured fibula is four to six weeks.

Reynolds burst onto the scene this fall, starting the first two games and getting rave reviews from coaches and teammates for his playmaking skills.

He is second on the team with 13 receptions. He also has 73 receiving yards.

The source also said that Reynolds is upset, but in good spirits and is already talking about coming back better than ever.

Reynolds’ injury occurred after Parker found out in a Monday afternoon MRI his season is over. Parker suffered the left leg injury in the first quarter of the Army game last week.

Coach Paul Rhoads said Parker, a senior who hasn’t used a redshirt season, will appeal for a medical redshirt. The NCAA rules state a player can receive a medical redshirt if they play in 30 percent of a team’s games in the first half of the season. By starting the first four games, Parker competed in 33 percent of ISU’s contests.

“This is a young man that would certainly deserve it, playing all the way through and doing all the things right, educationally as well as football,” Rhoads said.

Parker started 28 straight games before tearing his ACL. He had 13 tackles, two tackles for loss and two sacks this season.

The Cyclones listed Patrick Neal and Roosevelt Maggitt co-starters on this week’s depth chart.

Bell, McDowell still on team
Rhoads said Allen Bell and Devin McDowell are part of the ISU football team, contrary to Internet reports that the duo had quit the football team.

Neither Bell nor McDowell practiced on Tuesday.

Bell has played mostly on special teams this season. McDowell has played in only the Kent State game.

A-Rob held out of practice
Running back Alexander Robinson, who is nursing an injured groin, didn’t practice on Tuesday, but Rhoads said all signs indicate Robinson will be able to play in Saturday’s Big 12 Conference opener against Kansas State.

“We held him out today, but he bounced out there at the end of practice,” Rhoads said. “They wanted to get him a little bit extra pool work early in the week. I looked at the tail end of practice, and he came running through the gate coming down to join us, so I think that’s a pretty good sign.”
