No RB, no QB, no changes to game plan

Iowa State started to prepare for Kent State during the summer. The outlines for a game plan were put in place before the Golden Flashes have played a game.

Adjustments have been made after the Cyclone coaches reviewed Kent State’s first two games. But this week the Golden Flashes lost starting running back Eugene Jarvis, who is out for the season with a kidney injury, and starting quarterback Giorgio Morgan, who will miss Saturday’s game with an ankle injury.

So those changes must throw a wrench into the game plan, right? Well, not really.

“We made a plan this summer and we’ve taken that plan and put it with what they’ve done in the first two games this year and it’s very similar,” defensive coordinator Wally Burnham said. “We will continue with that.”

Head coach Paul Rhoads said coaches only change game plans if there is a different caliber athlete replacing the starter or if the replacement will be asked to do something different from the starter.

And the coaches don’t see either of those things with Kent State.

“If one quarterback was purely an athlete and we was going to run it and scramble it and run the option, the other one was a classic sit back in the pocket passer then you would definitely alter what you were doing,” Rhoads said.
