UNC coach getting familiar with Ames

Friday, July 31 marked the end of the summer recruiting period, and Roy Williams was happy to celebrate the occasion in his office at North Carolina.

The Tarheels head coach said he’s been on the road 17 days this month, which is one of the busiest times of the year for college coaches. He also mentioned that he’d snuck in a few trips to Mid-Iowa in the last several months.

“I’ll say this; I’ve been to Ames six times in the last 13 months,” Williams said.

Williams’ visits haven’t been to take in Iowa State basketball games. The former Kansas coach is returning to Big 12 country to recruit Ames High senior Harrison Barnes.

Barnes has received some two dozen scholarship offers, including from hometown team Iowa State and UNC archrival Duke. In the coming weeks he plans to narrow the list of schools he is considering from 12 to five or six.

While college coaches cannot speak specifically about individual players who have not yet signed Letters of Intent, Williams said there is still room on his roster for an additional player or two in the class of 2010.

“We’ve got two commitments, and I expect to get another,” he said. “We’ll probably have three or four scholarships open.”

As much as I would like him to stay in state, UNC would be good fit for him.
