With Guor Marial, Kiel Uhl and Zac Brouillette leading the way, the Iowa State men’s track team surged into second-place after the first day of the Big 12 Track and Field Championships in the Gilliam Indoor Track Stadium in College Station, Texas. Nebraska led the men’s competition with 42.5 points. Iowa State is second with 24 points. The Iowa State women are ninth with 12 points.

Marial, a sophomore and Uhl, a senior who prepped at Des Moines Roosevelt,
finished second and third, respectively, in the 5,000-meter run. Marial finished with a time of 14 minutes, 11.09 seconds, and Uhl finished in 14:12.59. Jon Kosgei of Oklahoma State won the race in 14:10.18. The ISU pair worked together.

“The pace was really slow early,” Marial said. “With about 14 laps to go it still was slow and Kosgei is a miler. I knew if I a made a move, Kiel would come with me. We didn’t want it to turn into a miler’s 5,000 with it coming down to a kick. Winning would have been great but we did a good job.”

Uhl agreed with his teammate.

“The pace at the Big 12 meet in this race has been slow before,” Uhl said. “Guor and I had talked last week about the distance runners stepping up because coach Ihmels has invested a lot in us. We did that tonight.”

Senior Zac Brouillette finished third in the weight throw, posting a 65-01.50 effort. Brouillette had his best series of the season with every throw at least 61 feet.

“I am happy with the effort,” Brouillette said. “I was seventh last season so today is a major improvement. Every throw was a good effort and that is the first time I have put together that kind of series this season.”

Iowa State head coach Corey Ihmels lauded the Cyclone throwers.

“The throwers did a really good job for us today,” Ihmels said. “Zac was strong throughout the competition. Laishema Hampton did a great job on the women’s side earning us points. Guor and Kiel have worked so hard and it was great to see that be rewarded with success.”

The Cyclone men’s distance medley of Michael Alexander, Matt Brinkley, James
Galvin and Hilary Bor finished fifth.

The Cyclone women come to College Station without NCAA 10,000-meter champion Lisa Koll. Koll, the American Collegiate Record setter last season, is
sidelined with an injury. She would have been a prohibitive favorite to repeat
as Big 12 indoor 5,000-meter champion.

Grace Kemmey finished third in the 5,000-meter race, posting a Division I provisional qualifying time of 16:42.06. Kemmey missed her teammate.

“I would just say not having Lisa here, it just wasn’t right,” Kemmey
said. “But I feel good about my race tonight.”

Jenna Caffrey posted a personal record in the women’s pentathlon. The sophomore’s 3,582 points was good enough for fifth place. Freshman Jordon Andreassen finished eighth in the pentathlon with 3,410 points. Caffrey was confronted with a nearly impossible task of having to run her heat in the 100- meter hurdles just moments after completing the pentathlon 800-meters. She did not qualify.

“I was a little disappointed overall but I am learning the (pentathlon) events,” Caffrey said. “The early part of the season was frustrating to me but I made real progress at the ISU Classic. There were a couple events where I didn’t do as well as I had earlier this year. Overall though, I have learned a lot in a short time.”

Eric Parker, James Galvan and Hillary Bor qualified for their final in the 60- meter hurdles, 800-meter run and the mile run, respectively.

In women’s competition, ISU freshman Kianna Elahi qualified for the finals in
the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 7.98, four-tenths of a second off his
season best.

Running events begin at 3 p.m. today with the 60-meter hurdles. Live action
from the 2009 Big 12 Indoor Track & Field Championships will be video streamed
for free on the Big 12 Conference’s official web site, Big12sports.com, as
well as AggieAthletics.com.
